Dedicated or Virtual Server… Which One Is
Appropriate for You?
Now you are ready to get that site up on the web. It is
designed flawlessly, works perfectly after some tweaking

beta testing, you have begun advertising
in opt-in lists and all over the web and print papers with
the date which your site will launch.
What next?
The next big step, actually the BIGGEST is deciding on what
type of server you want to put it on for.
They both have their pros and cons. Let us look at the
Dedicated
Server first:
- A dedicated server is a web server that stores files for
your website ONLY.
- You do not have to share the server space with anyone
but yourself.
- Generally, you have full access to shell and command line
modes and you can install any software programs and applications
you want to use.
- OF course, because you will not be sharing the server,
you get to pay for it all yourself.
- You should however try out a virtual server before dedicating
and paying for a dedicated server unless you have a band
hog for a site.
Virtual Server
- Also called shared hosting is a web
server shared with others who use it for their web sites
too. The web server will have your web site’s
files and also all the files of the other web hosts
and their customers.
- It is cost effective to share a web server with any number
of others that way it is not expensive like a dedicated
server would be. In addition, if the site goes belly up,
you will not have so much invested in it. A virtual server
makes sense for the pocketbook with a fledgling site.
- You also need to know what else is running on the server
because you can affect each other’s sites. A customer
on another site may upgrade and install a program script
that affects the server’s ability to work properly
or worst-case scenario shut the server down totally.
Now, that you have a bit of information to make informed
decisions, you should still do your own research on any
advice you get no matter where it is from. The tips here
are common sense and should save a new web master some money
in the long run and if the web site fails, you hopefully
will not have invested your life savings into it and can
walk away with at least your shirt.
