Adding a Dash of Class?
Many times when
planning a website for
either a client or myself I would chance upon a catchy or
unique name for a domain and would immediately rush to Go
daddy’s website to check upon the availability of
it. I would proceed to type in the ditditdit.com domain
name that I so proudly had come up with then press the enter
key only to sadly discover that my
good domain name
was previously taken by another and was not available.
Since the name was not available, I had to come up with
alternate. I have found that it is very possible to create
domain names that use the dash in them and still have one
heck of a good domain name. I personally have used several
domain names, which has incorporated dashes in them. Let
us face it, which of these domains would be easier to read
and simpler to remember. www.survivaltraining.info or www.survival-training.info?
That is right! The second one is much easier to read as
well as easier on the eyes.
The search engines see no distinction between a domain name
containing a dash in it or one without the dash. Strangebrews.com
and strange-brews.com would be treated similarly when using
the Yahoo search engine.
One of the major problems, which I perceive in employing
dashes, does not focus upon the search engines as much as
it does on the people who use those search engines. Folks
tend to get perplexed as to where they should place the
dash when typing it in the address bar of their browser.
This is not a good indication and could eventually cause
the loss of valuable
website traffic.
Many schools of though think that it may be possible to
safely use a single dash in the domain name without it appearing
in poor taste, however I have effectively used multiple
dashes in several domain names and had encounter no problems.
In fact, it had a tendency to improve the way the domains
(ocean-1-outlets.com and image-1-photography.com) appeared
to the prospective visitor. This was without a doubt to
my advantage as well as to the clients.
It has been assumed that you cannot foster a significant
traffic base by using a dashed domain name. I do not agree
with that statement, as people simply do not look at the
domain name and decline to do business with the vendor simply
because of the use of a dash. Dashed domain can encourage
an identifiable brand if accomplished in the proper manner.
As with any other features, involving
website design
the decision to use or not to use the dashed domain name
is entirely up to you and your client.
